Matthew Skelton, M.D.
Background:
Medical Oncology, Hematology
Dr. Matthew R. Skelton graduated with a Doctor of Medicine
degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania in 2001. While at Jefferson, he was a member
of the Association of Pathology Chairs Honor Society and
President of the Jefferson Internal Medicine Society.
In this role, he organized a physical diagnosis course
for second year medical students, initiated a monthly
lecture series, and published an internal survey of senior
medical students’ experience with residency
interviews. In addition, he was active in Jeff HOPE Clinic,
a free medical clinic in Philadelphia.
Prior to medical school, Dr. Skelton earned a Bachelor
of Science degree from Fordham University in New York
City. After college, he spent a year with the Jesuit Volunteer
Corp in San Jose, California teaching English as a Second
Language (ESL) and administering several aid programs.
He also recognized a calling to medicine through assisting
in a free medical clinic that was held at the community
service center.
After medical school, Dr. Skelton went on to complete
his residency in internal medicine in 2004 at the Mayo
Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. While at the Mayo Clinic,
Dr. Skelton pursued dual commitments to education and
to service. He further developed his community service
interest by regularly staffing the Salvation Army Free
Medical Clinic for which he was recognized with the Chief
Medical Resident Certificate of Appreciation. Dr. Skelton
also honed his teaching abilities in medicine at The Clinic.
There, he had the opportunity to present regular lectures
in-house, as well as to present medical findings at a
host of national medical conferences. Dr. Skelton received
one of three resident-physician American Association of
Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE )scholarship awards for
his presentation at the 2003 AACE annual meeting. After
his residency Dr. Skelton practiced general internal medicine
as a Hospitalist at the Mayo Clinic. During this time,
he decided to pursue medical subspecialty training in
Hematology and Oncology.
Before joining Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Dr. Skelton was
a Clinical Fellow in the Department of Hematology/Oncology
at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC).
At UNC, he contributed to several medical publications
on brain tumors, colon cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma.
These articles appeared in the publications of the American
Society of Clinical Oncology
(ASCO), the Clinical Colorectal Carcinoma and Clinical
Advances in Hematology and Oncology.
Dr. Skelton is board certified in internal medicine and
is a Diplomat in American Board of Internal Medicine and
board eligible in hematology and oncology.
During the first four years of his life, Dr. Skelton lived
in Maracaibo, Venezuela, where he developed an enduring
interest in the Spanish culture. Most of his free time
is spent with his wife and children. When time permits
he also pursues his love of reading historical fiction
and anthropology, sailing, downhill skiing, hiking and
